“While the research to date is significant and should be adequate to convince public policy makers, lawmakers and regulators that action is needed, better crash data and other research should be pursued to clarify and quantify the magnitude of the driver distraction problem as well as the relative contributions of different sources of driver distraction,” said ASSE President C. Christopher Patton, CSP.

Take for example, the recent crash witnessed locally by Accuform CEO Wayne Johnson’s Fiancée, Cyndi. While driving here in Brooksville, Florida, Cyndi watched the car in front of her veer out of control and flip several times. The driver, a teenage girl, survived without serious injury. The cause of the accident? Distracted driving while briefly changing the channels on a Pandora App. Whether texting or choosing the next tune, your likelihood of an accident is exponential within just 3 seconds of your diverted attention.

Texts Can Wait

This incident exemplifies the difficulty some regulators have had in defining the rules against texting and driving. The danger lies not only in the specific act of texting, but any activity that involves manipulating a device with one’s fingers or taking eyes of the road, according to the New York Times (Ritchell, 2009). In fact, some transportation industries depend on the en-route use of electronic devices for navigation and communication. Our personal vehicles are also increasingly decked out with potentially distracting electronic devices. Despite the normalized usage of these devices, the hazard persists.

A Grave Mistake

It takes 5 seconds. You are 23 times more likely to be involved in an accident when you do it.
It’s illegal in over 40 states but 57 percent of us are guilty of it daily. It contributes to 2600 deaths in the USA every year. It costs 43 billion dollars annually. Its hazard is equal to that of driving under the influence of 4 beers. It’s nothing to ROTFLMAO about.

"Worst Driving Behavior"

The National Safety Council’s CEO and President, Janet Froetscher, has identified texting and the use of a cell phone while driving as one of America’s most urgent traffic safety issues. "Our nation has reached a point where we estimate more than 100 million people are engaging in this dangerous behavior daily," Froetscher said (full article).
